Idiot's Step by Step Guide for Setting up Ubuntu

I recently got my own unmanaged VPS and I had to quickly learn how to be my own System Administrator (SysAdmin). The documentation on the intertubes is horrific and I was looking for any easy way to maintain my new box.

If you're like me and started using Linux on the Mac OS X, and you like MacPorts, then you'll be happy to learn that Ubuntu has something very similar in apt-get. Actually aptitude does an even better job than apt-get because it'll install dependencies and handle a lot of the clean up, just like MacPorts.

  • will sometimes cut off his/her nose off to spite his/her face
  • buys crap that makes no sense whatsoever, like those big foam fingers for $10 at sports games

E-mail Spamming Botnets: Signatures and Characteristics

Also known as Command and Control Servers (C&C), botnets are an interesting phenomenon that involves a group of compromised host machines that are controlled by a smaller number of command hosts, which sometimes are controlled by a "bot herder", the botnet's originator.

A recent article about detecting email spamming botnets was published by a series of Microsoft Researchers where they developed an innovative system called AutoRE. Naturally they tested the framework against MSN Hotmail, and their findings were pretty compelling.
